Story of Fund
Kathryn and Roy Shoemaker were life long residents of Centre County, both passing away in 2005 after long happy lives in the State College area. Roy was a businessman and farmer in the Centre Region. Their love of the area inspired them to share their resources with the community. They distributed a substantial portion of their estate to the Kathryn K. & Roy D. Shoemaker Charitable Trust. Merrill Lynch Trust Company was named as Trustee and the Centre Foundation as the organization responsible for distribution to the beneficiaries. Disbursements from the trust come to the Foundation and are distributed to the thirteen charitable organizations named as beneficiaries, all of whom serve Centre County residents.
How Does it Help?
The greatest use of a life is to spend it on something that will outlast it.
- William James
The Kathryn K. and Roy D. Shoemaker Charitable Trust Fund supports thirteen organizations. All of these great charities support our local community, and several were particularly helpful to the Shoemakers personally. Collectively these organizations support people with sight loss, seniors in need of home care and support services, emergency service providers, people battling cancer, as well as a variety of other human services. In addition, to encourage students to peruse the field of agriculture which was so important to the Shoemakers, the fund provides two generous scholarships to Penn State for two State College Area High School seniors who have committed to studying agriculture.
