Bill and Georgeann Opdenhoff Memorial Award Fund

Supporting Exemplary Education within SCASD

Story of Fund

Stock fund general education girl in cap and gown

This fund was established in memory of Bill and Georgeann Opdenhoff. Bill was a former superintendent of the State College Area School District, serving from 1993 until 1999 and remained active in education in the area. Georgeann was an instructional support teacher at the district's Panorama Village Elementary School, working one-on-one with teachers and children to aid students with learning difficulties. Both worked in the district's elementary schools in the early 1970s.

The State College Area School District chose to honor the memory of the Opdenhoffs by establishing this memorial fund that will be a component of the district's Educational Initiatives Endowment, which was established under Bill's leadership in 1999.

"We believe this designation to be the most meaningful way to perpetuate Bill and Georgeann's personal dedication to education," said Patricia Best, SCASD Superintendent.  "Helping every child find success in school seems to provide a fitting remembrance of Bill and Georgeann's lives as exemplary educators and friends.  The endowment returns will allow us to continue their legacy and to honor their memories year after year."

How Does it Help?

Bill's leadership as superintendent was notable in his concern for students and his commitment to help us all function as a team. Georgeann will be remembered for her gentleness, kindness and her ready smile.

The Opdenhoff Memorial Award Fund makes annual awards to State College Area School District.  The fund will support faculty and staff in developing instructional strategies to help every child find success in school.  The annual faculty grants support instructional day activities and curricular experiences not possible within the district's budgetary confines.  The awards typically enhance educational opportunities K-12 to augment class time quality across the disciplines.

The mission of the SCASD is to prepare students for lifelong success through excellence in education.  The district draws its students from a 150 square mile attendance area encompassing the Borough of State College and the surrounding townships of College, Ferguson, Halfmoon, Harris, and Patton, totaling an enrollment of approximately 6,900.
